East Torrens Primary School
The East Torrens Primary School project set out to transform an outdoor area into a natural creek environment, creating a space that encourages exploration, play, and learning through interaction with natural elements.
DESIGN INTENT
The brief focused on creating an immersive, creek-like landscape where children could engage with water, rocks, and vegetation in a safe and educational setting. The challenge was to design a naturalistic environment that balanced interactive play, safety, and environmental integration.
KEY FEATURES
The space incorporates a variety of tactile and sensory elements, including natural rocks, sands, and pebbles, alongside timber crossings that allow children to navigate the creek safely. Electronic water controllers deliver flowing water from embedded rock features, enhancing the realism and play value of the creek. Additional elements include a sand pit, thoughtfully placed planting, and a mix of existing and new trees that provide shade, texture, and natural exploration opportunities.
OUTCOMES
The completed design offers an immersive environment where children can experiment, explore, and interact with multiple sensory and tactile elements. The space encourages curiosity, collaborative play, and a connection with the natural world, providing a vibrant outdoor classroom that complements the school’s educational objectives.
