Hawthorndene Primary School
The Hawthorndene Primary School project focused on creating a safe, functional, and cohesive outdoor learning and play environment within a constrained and established site. The design needed to successfully integrate a range of predesigned play equipment alongside sculptural elements, while resolving complex changes in level and maintaining clear, intuitive movement throughout the space.
A strong emphasis was placed on flow and level resolution to ensure accessibility, safety, and ease of supervision. Carefully considered pathways and transitions between play zones allow students to move naturally through the site, supporting both active play and quieter moments of exploration. Retaining rocks were strategically introduced to manage grade changes while reinforcing the Nature Play theme, providing informal seating, climbing opportunities, and tactile engagement with natural materials.
The design thoughtfully incorporated existing playground equipment, mature trees, and site features, ensuring minimal disruption and maximising the value of what was already present. These elements were woven into the new layout to create a layered and connected landscape that feels established, yet refreshed. The result is a balanced outdoor environment that supports imaginative play, environmental connection, and safe, everyday use for the school community.
